Earlier today I was having a conversation in which the subject of the Pledge of Allegiance came up and how by some nefarious scheme propagated by Fox News, President Obama was trying to remove the words “Under God” from the pledge.
First lets be clear the words “One nation under God” were not in the original pledge. In fact from My research the pledge was written by a member of the second most hated group of the Right a “Socialist” that word (Socialist) will eventually lead us back to My earlier post “Language is important” but in this not only is language important but words are also important.
So what where the words of the original “Pledge of Allegiance”? the words as in written in 1892 are ” I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all” The funny thing here is no where in the original pledge do you find the words “United States of America” or “Under God” that was in 1892. The next Evolution of the “Pledge” came in 1923 when the word “My” as deleted and the words ” the Flag of the United States of America” were added.
So now we have a “Pledge” written by a “Socialist” that was generic in nature that could apply to every country in the world now becoming a “Pledge” to this country. Nothing necessarily wrong in that this country has a history of theft.
It was not until 1954 the year I was born that the words “Under God” were added to the “Pledge” at the behest of President Eisenhower ( a “Republican” and I uses that word in reluctance as it equates the GOP with our “republican ” form of government an inference that I do not wish to draw although the GOP would love to and continue to do). In response to the ” Communist threat of the times”(those “Godless Communists”, remember “Communism” is an economic doctrine not a religious doctrine) Again nothing necessarily wrong. The issue arises from the following:
1. There are those who would lead us to believe that the words “Under God” have always been there.
2. There are those that “Tradition” requires the words “Under God” this ignores the fact that “Tradition” is not universal and what may be tradition for one is not tradition for all. “tradition is dependant upon two factors A: Culture (again an independent variable) and B: Time. This means that “Tradition changes over time and culture. (Again this points to the fact that Language and Words are important.)
3. That the founding fathers of this country established a “Christian Nation” (To date I have not been able to find “Christ”, “Christian” or any variant there of in any of the founding Documents of this country, i.e. the “Declaration of Independence”, the “Articles of Confederation” or the “Constitution”. That we were founded as a “Christian Nation” is another “Conservative/Fox News” myth.
4. You cannot be a good American unless you believe in the one and only “God” as defined by the “Evangelical Christians”, or the “Christian God” in this scenario “Christ” has replaced “God” and should you believe in the Bible is in and of it’s self a violation of the first commandment.
So we come back to an earlier post that “Language is Important”. Words are the foundation of language and the use of words such as “Tradition”, “Values”, or “Principals” without providing context or definition allowing the reader or listener to draw what ever meaning they choose is nothing more than fraud and the manipulation of those whom you claim to serve for your own benefit. The division of the country through the manipulation of language and the creation of sham issues does nothing but preserve “Privilege” for the few at the expense of the majority. The fact that someone or party has been able to distort facts through the creation of a common belief that is contradicted by the facts is nothing more than slight of hand designed to preserve privilege. This is the case with the words “Under God” in the “Pledge” and “Tradition”.
